St Clements Church: Gutter Maintenance in Derby
Our Sudell Derby team were called out to St Clements Church to carry out church gutter maintenance, including a full gutter clear and the unblocking of multiple cast iron downpipes.
Church and historic buildings often hide drainage issues until water has nowhere left to go. In this case, debris had built up within the gutter system and compacted inside the downpipes, preventing rainwater from flowing away safely from the building and affecting the overall rainwater drainage system.
What was going wrong
Although the gutters themselves required clearing, the main issue was within the downpipes. The blocked cast iron downpipes were restricted internally — the kind of problem that cannot be resolved with a simple flush or surface clean.
When a church downpipe stops draining correctly, water backs up quickly. This places added strain on joints, fixings, masonry, and surrounding stonework. Over time, poor church gutter maintenance can lead to damp ingress, staining, and avoidable long-term damage.
How we put it right
Our team carried out a full gutter clear using our powerful gutter vac systems before moving on to the downpipes. Using professional drainage rods, we carefully worked through the cast iron pipework to break up and remove compacted debris from inside the system.
This method allows us to carry out effective downpipe unblocking while protecting older materials, restoring proper flow throughout the entire rainwater drainage system.
Why drainage rods work best
Cast iron drainage requires a careful, considered approach. Drainage rods are particularly effective because they:
- Clear deep internal blockages, not just surface debris
- Avoid cracking or stressing ageing cast iron
- Reach areas flushing often can’t
- Restore full pipe diameter and water flow
- Reduce the likelihood of recurring blockages
This makes them well suited to church gutter maintenance and historic drainage systems.

What this means for the church
With clean gutters and fully unblocked downpipes, the church’s rainwater drainage system now benefits from:
Proper rainwater flow during heavy rainfall
Reduced risk of damp and water damage
Less strain on ageing cast iron pipework
Cleaner elevations and reduced water staining
A preventative fix that protects the building long-term
Working with church buildings
We regularly carry out church gutter cleaning, downpipe unblocking, and ongoing church gutter maintenance across our local areas, along with many other exterior maintenance services. These buildings require experience and methods that respect their age and construction — not quick fixes.
As a result of the work carried out, the drainage system is now working as intended, helping protect the building from avoidable water-related issues going forward.
