Gutter Cleaning Facts
7 ESSENTIAL REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD REGULARLY CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS & DRAINS
- 1
Prevent Water Damage:
The primary purpose of gutters is to channel rainwater away from your home’s foundation.
However, over time, gutters can become clogged with natures trouble makers, such as leaves, moss, twigs, and pine needles.
When this happens, water can overflow, leading to costly water damage, damp and decay including potential structural issues.
- 2
Prevent Gutter Damage:
The weight of debris accumulated in gutters, combined with moisture, can put excessive stress on the gutter system.
Over time, this strain can lead to sagging, detachment from the house, or even gutter collapse.
Regular cleaning eliminates the debris that contributes to this strain, prolonging the lifespan of your gutters and avoiding costly repairs or replacements.
- 3
Deter Pest Infestations:
Clogged gutters can become attractive breeding grounds for pests, including mosquitoes, birds, rodents, and insects.
The damp and debris-filled environment provides a perfect habitat for these unwanted guests.
By keeping your gutters clean, you eliminate their nesting and breeding opportunities, discouraging pest infestations and maintaining a pest-free home.
- 4
Maintain Curb Appeal:
Clean gutters enhance the overall appearance of your home. Who wouldn’t you want the cleanest house in your neighborhood
Clogged gutters with overflowing water or visible debris can give a neglected and untidy impression.
By regularly cleaning your gutters, you ensure that your home maintains its curb appeal, adding value and pride to your property.
- 5
Prevent Ice Dams:
We all know that winter can be cold.
As the seasons change, clogged gutters can contribute to the formation of ice dams.
When gutters are obstructed, melted snow cannot flow properly, leading to ice accumulation along the roof edges.
Ice dams can cause significant damage to the roof, gutters, and even the interior of your home. Regular gutter cleaning helps prevent ice dams and the associated risks.
- 6
Preserve Landscape and Gardens:
When gutters are clogged, water can overflow and cascade directly onto your landscaping or garden beds.
Excessive water exposure can damage plants, erode soil, and negatively impact the aesthetics of your outdoor space.
By keeping your gutters clean, you can ensure that water is directed away from your precious plants, preserving their health and beauty.
- 7
Avoid Basement Flooding:
If you’re lucky enough to have a basement here in the UK, clogged gutters can also contribute to basement flooding.
If water overflows from the gutters, it can seep into the basement through cracks or compromised areas.
Regular gutter cleaning ensures proper water flow and reduces the risk of water infiltrating your basement, protecting your belongings and maintaining a dry living space.
Gutter Repair Facts
The 6 most common gutter repairs that can have devastating consequences
- 1
Leaking Gutter Joints:
Leaks can occur due to various reasons, including damage to the gutter system, loose connections, or worn-out seals or improperly secured parts.
Repairing leaks typically involves identifying the source of the leak, appropriated securing the gutter joint to the fascia and sealing it using a specific low modulus sealer.
- 2
Gutter Separation
Gutters are typically made of materials like aluminum or UPVC, which can contract and expand with changes in temperature. Over time, this thermal movement can lead to gaps or separations between gutter sections.
When gutters separate, they can no longer effectively direct water away from your home, potentially causing water damage to your roof, walls, or foundation.
Repairing gutter separation usually involves reattaching or realigning the separated sections. This may include using screws, brackets, and sealants to secure the gutters and ensure proper water flow.
- 3
Incorrect Gutter Alignment
Over time, gutters can become misaligned or detached from the fascia board, which is the board attached to the eaves of the roof. This can happen due to strong winds, heavy rainfall, or general wear and tear.
Realigning or reattaching the gutters may involve adjusting the hangers or brackets that hold them in place and securing them properly.
- 4
Rainwater Channeling Behind the Gutter
Improper installation or deterioration of fascias, gutters and the roofing membrane can result in water seeping between the gutter and the fascia board, leading to water channeling behind the gutter instead of flowing into it.
This problem can occur when the membrane, which is a waterproof barrier installed between the roofing material and the gutter, is not properly installed or has deteriorated over time.
Water channeling behind the gutter can cause rotting of the fascia board, damage to the roof structure, or even leaks inside the house.
Repairing this issue often involves inspecting and repairing the roofing membrane, ensuring proper installation of flashing, and redirecting the water flow back into the gutter.
It may also include replacing damaged fascia boards or addressing any underlying roofing issues.
If you notice water channeling behind your gutter, it’s important to address it promptly to prevent further damage.
Hiring a professional roofer or gutter repair service can help assess the situation accurately and provide the necessary repairs or replacements to ensure proper water drainage and protection for your home.
- 5
Sagging Gutters:
Gutters that sag or slope improperly can cause water to pool in certain areas, leading to potential damage.
Sagging gutters are usually caused by the accumulation of debris or insufficient support.
Repairing this issue often involves cleaning the gutters, reinforcing or replacing damaged hangers, and ensuring proper slope for efficient water drainage.
- 6
Gutters Fallen Down:
In some cases, gutters may be too damaged or deteriorated to be effectively repaired. If the damage is extensive or if the gutters are old and beyond repair, replacing them might be necessary.
Gutter replacement involves removing the old gutters and installing new ones that are properly sized and fitted to ensure optimal water flow and protection..
