How to Identify and Fix Gutter Leaks

Identifying and repairing gutter leaks, including gutter separation caused by expansion and contraction, can help prevent more serious issues down the line.

The Importance of Maintaining Your Rainwater Gutter System

A rainwater gutter system is one of the first lines of defense for any building during a downpour. Unmaintained gutters can put strain on gutter joints, therefore it is important to keep gutters maintained yearly, and in some instances, more frequent gutter maintenance may be required.

Signs of a Failing Gutter Joint

There are several signs that can indicate a failing gutter joint. Here are some of the most common:

  1. Watermarks, grey staining and moss present on the outside edges of the gutter joint. These leaks may appear harmless, however, the constant leak onto brickwork or the property’s foundation can cause mold and mildew to grow, which may even eventually cause wood to rot, weakening the foundation of your home and compromising its overall safety.
  2. Sagging gutters: If you notice that your gutters are sagging or pulling away from your home, it may be due to a failing joint. This can happen when the joint becomes weak or separated from the rest of the gutter.
  3. Rust or corrosion: If you see rust or corrosion on the joint or the surrounding area, it may be a sign that the joint is failing. This can weaken the joint and make it more susceptible to damage.
  4. Cracks or gaps: If you see cracks or gaps in the joint or the surrounding area, it could be a sign that the joint is failing. This can allow water to escape from the gutter and cause damage to your home.
  5. Peeling paint or mold growth: If you notice peeling paint or mold growth on the fascia or brickwork, it could be a sign that water is escaping from the gutter due to a failing joint. This can lead to damage to your home’s siding or other exterior surfaces.

The problem of gutter separation

One problem we frequently come across is gutter joints having parted from the gutter itself. Expansion and contraction can cause your gutter to move up to 50mm! The obvious issues if this isn’t identified before a downpour are flooding, damp, and water entering the property.

Repairing Gutter Leaks

If you’ve identified a leaking gutter joint, here’s how to repair it:

  • Unscrew the failing joint and remove it from the gutter. It is sometimes easier to unclip nearby brackets, and we can then gently twist the gutter and remove the joint.
  • Clean the outside and inside of the gutter surrounding the area. Ensure debris or grit is wiped away in preparation for the new joint. Any grit or debris that is not removed could clamp in between the gutter and seal, which could cause the new joint to leak.
  • Now the gutter is prepared for the new joint to be installed. The easiest way to do this is to hold the rear side of the gutter and gently twist it towards you. This will give enough room to put the back of the new joint onto the gutter first. Once this is attached, the front can then be clipped in. It is much easier to clip the back in before the front.
  • Now the new joint is in position, it is important to align it with the rest of the gutter. Once you’re happy, screw in the joint. It is common for the joints to not be screwed in, which causes the gutter to sag in this area resulting in overflow.
